The Den
End Table Entertainment Center Lighting Mantel
Picture Frames Speaker Table BCD Clock

We have made several changes in our den since purchasing the house in 2003, the mantel, the entertainment center, the end table between our chairs, the lights and picture frames.   I placed a 13 Watt LED bulb in the top of the pole lamp, for watching TV.   The high-lights are dual 32 watt LEDs, we use when we really want to light up the den (like when these pics were made).   Other pages here will cover the entertainment center, mantel, and end table.

In 2021, I got tired of the visible cable mess under the Entertainment Center, so I built a cable tray to get everything off the floor.

I mention high effeciency lights several times in the house mods, before I retired we replaced all lights with LEDs in the entire house (even the attic lights).   This was part of my retirement strategy to reduce the maintenance cost of the house as much as possible.   Maintenance improvements I made: AC replaced with a 17 SEER unit, the attic ducts with the highest rated insulation factor I could find, the main insulation was increased to 20", radiant barrier added, 2 thermostat controlled fans in the attic, replaced wood fence with chain link, added vinyl siding, when the water heater conked out I replaced it with the most effecient I could find.   Mostly security changes: added a monitored sucurity system, hard wired network (way more secure than wireless also higher bandwidth), security cameras, motion detecting lights outside, a sprinkler system with a very flexible control.

From Betty's Office.   You can see the mantel on the left, end table with pole lamp behind, lower center, Entertainment Center, and hi-lights (next pic) upper right.   Note: the pole lamp is now used instead of the 13 Watt TV light.

Later pic showning new floor, new TV on the old stand, new Amish rockers, and Betty's mother in-law's china cabinet.

With lights on

The fireplace and Mantel on the left, spindle table right of hearth, and Entertainment center right.   I made the picture frames, one is pine the other is oak.

Looking South West from beside the fireplace.

Our recliners with the original End Table between.   Note the lamp, telepone, Harmony Companion, and Roku controller.   Several things on and around the end table require power.   The towel on my recliner is to protect it from me when I come in sweaty.

Note: there are 6 devices on the entertainment center, all controlled by the two remotes you see here.   the small one on the left controls our ROKU for all streaming, the other (Harmony Companion) controls all the other devices.

Power wire, under a OverFloor Cord Protector, between wall and North recliner.   This space is where the new Speaker Table & Den Storage will go.   The power wire runs across this space, under the recliner, and into the end table where it enters from the bottom.

Back of recliners, end table, pole lamp, and rocking lid trash can.,   I had to put feet on the rocking lid trash can, to raise it above the pole lamp base, so it would fit close the light.

South wall, you can see the kitchen and dining through the opening.

West wall with very old buffet.   This was given to my grandmother for helping a neighbor lady, and her family, who was seriously ill back during the depression.

Looking North West, buffet on the left, weather staion on the wall, door into Betty's office, bookcase and back door.

Close up of the weather station beside door to Betty's office.   The temp & humidity sensors are on the patio, rain & wind gauges on the roof.   A cable to the computer runs through the wall.

The hi-lights.   The Chili's shelf was already there, I just added the power from the light switch and built two boxes for dual LED fixtures.

Old 13 Watt tv light behind and above our chairs.   We don't use this light much, we normally use the pole lamp.
