Storage Bed Drawers

Storage Queen Drawers Drawer Fronts Head & Foot Boards

These are simple box drawers with 3/8" thick sides/front/back and half blind dovetailed corners.   The drawer fronts will be built separately and attached after the boxes are complete instead of an integral front as I have done in the past with other flush drawers. So I'm resawing 2x8 yellow pine in half making two slabs 11/16" thick then edge jointing them to make the drawer fronts.

Drawers

2x8s sawed to length now I'm resawing 3 slabs, 3/8" thick, to become drawer sides/backs/fronts.

Closer look at resawing (edgewise) 2x8 , note the kerf is just to the right of the line.   The objective is to have drawer sides/back/front 3/8" thick.   I drew the line 3/8" + 1/32" (.406") from the edge, that gives me a little room (1/32") to machine off when I clean up the bandsaw marks.   This Timbewolf blade saws very clean so it doesn't need much clean up.

Now I'm machining off the bandsaw marks, the 2x8 is too wide for my 6" jointer.   Using the planer guarantees the result will be a uniform 3/8".

Drawer sets (sides and front/backs) laid out on workbench with dovetailing jig.

A drawer set ready go dovetail.   You can see the rabbet, on the left edge, for the drawer bottom.

Several drawer sets after dovetailing.   Kyle came over today and helped saw and cut dovetails.

Closer look at dovetails.   These are blind dovetails, you will only be able to see them on the sides of the drawer.

A drawer frame being glued.

The rabbet on the bottom of a glued drawer frame.   I'll glue a piece of 3/16" plywood into this rabbet for the bottom.

Two drawer frames being glued and another drawer set ready to glue.

Five of the eight drawer frames stacked.

Cutting out the drawer bottoms.

Bottoms glued (and nailed) in.   The brads hold the drawer bottom in the rabbet while the glue sets.

Bottoms glued in all 8 drawers.   You can just see the edge of two main box frames stacked on the right.   You can also see the slides stacked on the shelf to the left.

Drawer Fronts

2x8 cut to length for drawer fronts.

Note the difference in joining the sides of 2x material: On the left 2x8 edge from the mill and on the right after jointing.   By doing this I can get nice flat edge joined panels where you can see joints but can't feel them.

Edge marked for resawing.   I'm splitting these in half.

Resawing new drawer front.

Closer look at resawing drawer front.   I'm splitting 2x into 1x

Drawer front slabs after resaw and thickness planing.

Slots for biscuits in drawer front edges.

Drawer front slabs being edge joined.

I made these little "tick" marks to position the biscuit slots.   After I sand this just a little you won't be able to feel the joint.
