Hand Gun Rack For A Safe
|
I had a problem, a new gun safe but it only has a shelf, no place for handguns.
The smaller safes don't come with much in the way of handgun storage.
I thought about it and looked on the internet for ideas and finally came up with this.
A wooden board (1x8) 7-1/2" long with a 2x2 glued across one side and four 5/16" dowels glued into the 2x2 at a 45° angle.
The barrels would be placed over the 45° dowels.
The safe had 15" of clearance, side to side, but the door opening was a little over 8" wide.
I decided to make two pieces 7-1/2" wide so each would go through the door.
I found some pieces of 1x8 in the shop (left over from stool making) and cut a couple of pieces 7-1/2" long for bases.
I almost always have 2x4s ripped in two, so I cut two 7-1/2" pieces for back blocks.
I ripped the 2x material so it was 1-1/2" square, then mitered the corner leaving a 1/2" wide flat at 45°.
I drilled 4 5/16" holes an inch deep into the back board then glued the backblocks to the bases.
Next I cut 8 5" long pieces of 5/16" dowel, chamfered each end and glued them into the holes in the backboard.
One of the objectives here is to not damage the riflings in the handguns, so I'll leave the dowels unpainted.
Initially, I'm placing the dowels 1-7/8" apart, I did this because of inside clearance.

You can see the overall shape of the backboard, it was 1-1/2" square before I mitered the corner leaving a 1/2" wide flat. |

Kind of looks like a gun mount on a battle ship. |

The bottoms, remember I said they were left over from stool making. |

After applying polyeurethane they are ready for guns. |

Note all our pistols have TruGlo TFO sights. These are one S&W and three XDm's. |
