In June 2007 we made a trip to Lake City Colorado and stayed in a cabin at the LakeView Resort.
Previously, I had also stayed at Castle Lakes Campground and Cabins several miles South of Lake San Cristobal.
On the way we rode the Cumbres & Toltec Rail Road in Chama NM, but thats for another page.
After we left Chama, we climbed Wolf Creek Pass, then down the other side to South Fork, North to Creed and North over Slumgullion Pass to Lake City.

![]() | A few minutes later I am more suitable attired for the cold and wind. |
![]() | As we drove the final mile to Lakeview this is Lake San Cristobal. |
![]() | This is the Lakeview office. The cabins are on the left up the side of the mountain, and their lodge is just beyond the cabins. |
![]() | This is from the cabin's porch in the morning, the sun is shining on the mountain tops to the south. |
![]() | A little zoom from the previous pic. |
![]() | There are mountains in every direction, this is West. |
![]() | And aspens up close around the cabin, this is North. |
![]() | Our bedroom is in the corner, the kitchen is on the right and the potty behind it. |
![]() | The other bed room door, the living room, TV, and wood stove. |
![]() | Betty fixing breakfast in the kitchen, the dining area and our junk. You can see its dark outside, cause the sun hadn't come up from behind the mountain. |
![]() | The love seat, we pulled it up in front of the stove every evening. Note Betty's shoes, the cabin has a convenient place to store her shoes, since they come off the instant she comes in the door. |
![]() | Looking at the door, the wood stove and TV on the right, the dining area on the left. |
![]() | A little different shot of the living area, the wood stove, and TV. |

![]() | The potty door and the kitchen. |
![]() | We had a lot of company during our stay. |
![]() | One of them really liked our truck. |
![]() | More company. There were 3 deer outside while I was taking these pics. |
![]() | We got up this one morning and it was about 29°, as we headed to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. |
| Google Maps view of the path. On the Pine Creek road, the red pointer is the parking lot, if you zoom in you can see the trail, toward the Gunnisson River, to the stair leading down into the canyon. The dam on the upper right is the Blue Mesa Resivoir dam. What the map calls the Pine Creek Trail is the original roadbed of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad to Grand Junction. View larger map. |
![]() | This is part of the stairs from the NPS web site. There are 232 stair steps to got down (and back up after the ride). |
![]() | This is the bottom of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. We are walking on the original narrow guage road bed of the Denver & Rio Grande. You hike about 3/4 mi. to get to the dock. |
![]() | You can see the boat dock in the distance, with the boat ready to go. |
![]() | The U.S. Park Dept. boat at it's dock. |
![]() | What it looked like on board one of the NPS boats (from the NPS web site). |
![]() | The Curicani Needle, it used to be on the Rio Grande logo. This is near the deepest part of the canyon, 2,700 feet. |
![]() | We took a drive up the road toward Engineer Pass. There is an interesting large ghost town/abandoned mine, and some neat water falls on this road. |
![]() | You note it looks like we're getting closer to the mountains, we are. |
![]() | Ocassionally we get a look at some distant mountains. |
![]() | Betty "chilling out". |
![]() | Heres our cabin from the outside. |
![]() | The back side of the cabin. One evening Betty was preparing to take her bath and looked out this window, there were some deer looking in at her, which gave her a "start". |
![]() | Looking to the South across Lake San Cristobal as we left. |
![]() | Here we are near Slumgullion Pass, as we leave Lake City. |
![]() | Looking back at the mountains just on the other side of Lake City. |
